What you Should Know About the 2024 Mazda CX-90
February 07 2023,
Mazda unveiled the new 2024 CX-90 last week and in doing so added a brand-new model at the top of its lineup of SUVs. Here is what you should know about it.
A near-premium three-row SUV
The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the most luxurious Mazda model ever sold in the country and also one of the largest. With its three rows of seats, the CX-90 can accommodate up to eight passengers in some configurations as well as a generous amount of cargo. Unlike the current CX-9, the CX-90 is aimed toward a more premium market and toward drivers who want a vehicle that is more engaging to drive than most vehicles in this segment. This is why the CX-90 uses a new platform that is similar to those used by performance SUVs positioned in the next price class.
This is also seen in the standard features of the CX-90, which include safety technologies such as Smart Brake Support, adaptive cruise control, and blind spot monitoring, as well as in the interior appointments, which comprise Nappa leather, stitched cloth accents and wood appliqués in some models.
Totally new underpinnings
Indeed, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 is entirely new under the skin, with a new chassis, a new suspension system, two new electrified powertrains, a new 8-speed transmission, and a revised i-Activ all-wheel drive system. In order to provide the CX-90 with more dynamic handling characteristics, Mazda engineers have chosen to give the new platform and the AWD system a rear bias instead of the front bias which is more common in this category. This is also why the all-new 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine and the 2.5L gasoline engine in the PHEV powertrains are mounted longitudinally. The 3.3L engine can be ordered in two power levels: 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque or 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque in the GT-P and Signature models.
The new PHEV powertrain is a first for Mazda in North America and it uses a 2.5L gasoline engine paired with a 17.8 kWh battery and an electric motor which can be used to drive the vehicle on its own in many conditions. We already know this powertrain delivers 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque but its official electric range has yet to be announced.
