Here are the Engines of the New 2024 Mazda CX-90

In addition to being an entirely new SUV that uses a new platform that has never been seen in production before, the 2024 Mazda CX-90 also introduces two new powertrains. Here are some more details about both.

The plug-in hybrid powertrain

The 2024 Mazda CX-90 is the first Mazda sold in Canada to be offered with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Thanks to the combination of a 2.5L Skyactiv four-cylinder engine, and electric motor, and a 17.8 kWh battery, the hybrid CX-90 can be driven only on electric power for a considerable distance, which means that many owners will be able to complete their daily commute without having to spend money on fuel. Even then, the gasoline engine is always there to provide additional power or to make sure the vehicle is capable of driving all day without having to stop for a charge. Speaking of power, this drivetrain delivers an impressive 323 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, making the CX-90 PHEV more fun to drive than many of its competitors.

The inline-six-cylinder engine

The entry-level models of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 are also treated to their own brand-new powertrain in the form of a 3.3L inline-six-cylinder engine. This completely new engine uses a turbocharger and a small electric motor sandwiched between it and the transmission to generate 280 horsepower and 332 lb-ft of torque while also achieving fuel consumption figures of only 9.9 L/100km in the city and 8.4 L/100km on the highway.

The high-output six-cylinder

The up-level GT-P and Signature models of the 2024 Mazda CX-90 are powered by a high-output variant of the same 3.3L turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine as the more affordable versions. This is why these two trim levels can boast an output of 340 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque when using premium fuel. Even with this increase in performance, the high-output CX-90 only needs 10.3 litres of fuel per 100 km in the city and 8.4 litres per 100 km on the highway on average.

Both powertrains are paired with an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission that has been designed specifically for use in vehicles equipped with an electrified drivetrain, as well as the standard i-Activ all-wheel drive system.
