While it's true that the Kia Sportage is a dynamic SUV like the Mazda CX-5, the comparison isn’t as kind to the Kia when you take a look at the efficiency of both SUVs. There, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 has the advantage.
Offered out of the gate with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine producing 187 horsepower and 186 lb-ft of torque, the CX-5's four-cylinder engine is more powerful than most rivals including the Kia Sportage with a 2.4-liter engine. The latter offers 181 horsepower and 175 lb-ft of torque.
Despite the power difference between the two models, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 offers better fuel economy with an average fuel consumption of 9.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 7.9 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway. The Kia Sportage averages 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 9.1 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.
Not surprisingly, the Kia Sportage is less popular than the Mazda CX-5 in terms of sales. The latter is both more powerful and more fuel efficient.
Even when you look at the more powerful engines, the 2019 Mazda CX-5 has the advantage. For one, it offers a diesel engine that is not found in the Kia Sportage, but beyond that it also offers a four-cylinder turbo engine in its Signature livery. The latter offers 250 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque while consuming an average of just 10.8 liters per 100 kilometers in the city and 8.7 liters per 100 kilometers on the highway.
